Alpenglow - Little Gem Painting Auction

Alpenglow | Copyright 2004 by Keith Bond | 6 x 9 | oil on panel
This is a study done in the studio based off a plein air study I did a few years ago.
A couple painting friends (Jake Gaedtke and John Taft) and I stayed in the cabin of another mutual friend in Hahn's Peak, Colorado. I awoke early one morning to capture the sun hitting Sand Mountain. It was so cold and the paint was so stiff that I couldn't brush it and had to apply it with a palette knife. That in combination with the very quickly changing light meant that I only got a very rough sketch. But I had the colors and values needed.
I have wanted to do something with that sketch for a long time. This little gem is a study to work out compositional ideas for a larger painting. I didn't use any photos, so I realize that I probably changed the mountain quite a bit from reality...but I'm okay with that. Oh, and I also left out Steamboat Lake which would have been a little sliver of water visible from this vantage point at the base of the mountain. I'm okay with that, too.
This painting will be auctioned over the next 2 days.
